Writers' Wall: Response to Creative Writing Prompt #2

Writing Prompt #2:

If you had to leave the city you live in, what would you find hardest to leave behind? If you were to move to a new city, what would you do to connect with the community, or establish yourself in a new place?

Leaving Orlando would mean leaving my family behind, my support circle. My wife and I both live within 5 miles of our parents and siblings. I would miss them terribly. I would also miss my soccer friends very much.

But leaving Orlando would not be hard for me. Nope. I'm ready. I'd love a fresh start after living in Orlando for over 10 years.

I'm afraid my answer to the second part of the prompt is rather predictable, for me anyway. Soccer. I speak soccer, so I'm never alone. Ever. No matter what part of the world I live in, I speak soccer, so I will never be long without friends.

I'm not joking, either.

A great example of this happened during my first trip to Spain. The first few days I was miserable, mostly by my own doing. Since I played football my senior year of high school I was really into weight lifting, and the dorm where I stayed had a great gym and track area.

After two days of getting really trying to figure out the metrics system, I gave up and decided to run instead. While running, I saw two guys kicking a soccer ball on some dirt fields. I stopped running (I'm not so fond of it anyway) and went over to them.

The three of us kicked the ball around for about half an hour before more people showed up. I organized a USA vs. The World pickup game on the dirt fields and we played for three hours. I made friends with other Americans who showed up, and they became friends I hung out with a lot during my six weeks there.

I've done that in dozens of cities across a handful of countries, and it never fails. Even in the USA I can usually find a pickup game some where (which doesn't mean I'll find Americans playing there though).

Passion is All You Need
Passion is All You Need

Find what your passion is and people who share that passion will find you.

Soccer is just one way I've found I can connect with people. What's more important is my ability to not take myself too seriously. I'm not afraid to look like a fool in front of people I don't know. I ask myself, "what's the worst that could happen?" If the answer is anything short of losing money or jeopardizing my health, I'll go for it.

It's about finding something you enjoy, and then finding that something everywhere you go. You'll find someone when you get there who loves that same thing as much as you do, or, worst case, you'll just be left with that thing you love to do (WIN!).
