The Tale of Tails: An Inspiration For All

Much to the anticipation of the African-American film world, the movie “Red Tails” will be released this coming Friday, January 20, 2012.

I, myself, not being as big a movie buff as I once was, have not been able to miss the countless endorsements enticing consumers to sweep the box office on Friday.   From social media to public commentary, “Red Tails” has been in my visual forefront even before it has graced the big screen.

The movie tells the story of African-American Tuskegee pilots who fight for freedom, in the midst of racism, during World War II; the men go on to become the first African-American fighter squad.

With so many options of oversexed romances, stereotyped caricatures and criminal-induced action-figures, it is refreshing to see an authentic representation of African-American culture displayed in mainstream film.

One morning-radio host urged her listeners to bring their children to see the movie, for the sake of fortifying legitimate role models of color in the light of crooked entertainers, athletes and neighborhood legends.

Behind the scenes, as much as the movie is currently being promoted, it has received menial support in production.  Film icon, George Lucas, infamous for creating the Star Wars franchise and Indiana Jones films, found it difficult to pitch an “all-black” cast to major film studios.

After all, who’s buying tickets to see Method Man, Neyo, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard if they aren’t singing, rapping, getting shot or naked, right?

Well, apparently there are millions waiting to prove Hollywood wrong.  Crowds of diverse backgrounds are making this a movie to be seen!
