Poetry Tips For the Poet in You!
Poetry is a representation of one’s ideas and expressions that creatively communicates their thoughts, in a style and rhythm that is distinctive to them. I don’t believe there is a right or wrong way to write a poetic composition, but I do believe there are ways to help us create our own literary piece. These ways aren’t a strict “how to”, but more or less tips to help you develop your own poetic masterpiece. The following is a list of a few tips taken from a writing by Melissa Donavan, that you can reference as you embark down the creative passage of writing poetry.
Poetry Writing Tips
- Read lots of poetry: This will help you see what things may work for you.
- Write poetry as often as you can: Find your poetic flow.
- Designate a special notebook (or space in your notebook) for poetry writing: Allows you to jot down your creative thoughts when inspired.
- Try writing in form (sonnets, haiku, etc.): Determine what style of writing fits you.
- Use imagery and metaphors: Creatively describe your emotion(s).
- Expand your vocabulary: Sometimes we get stomped with not knowing what word to use.
- Read poems over and over (and aloud): Determines what you personally like.
- Join a poetry forum or poetry writing group online: A group setting can help get your creative juices going and gather ideas.
- Study musicality in writing: Get a rhythmic flow that you like.
- Have creative things around: What things give you that feeling to be creative.
- Notice what makes others’ poetry memorable: Capture it, mix it up, and make it your own.
- Revise and rewrite your poems to make them stronger and more compelling: Find that piece that truly gets you smiling.
- Have fun: Keep it as a stress reliever type activity and not a job.
- Use language that people can understand: This is good if you like to do poetry readings or spoken words.
- Connect with other poets to share and discuss the craft that is poetry writing: It is amazing what can happen with you around like-minded individuals.
- Attend a poetry reading or slam poetry event: You might find something that will influence your writing.
- Write with honesty: Don’t back away from your thoughts or feelings. Express them, because writing poetry is about what you honestly feel inside.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment. Mix art and music with your poetry: Write poetry in a way that works for you, especially if you like to deliver it to an audience.
- Write a poem every single day: The more you write, the more you can find your poetic masterpiece.
