Is "Giving Back" a Priority for You?
Is "giving back" a priority for you? Does it have to be? Will it be in the future? These are questions we all should analyze as interconnected members of our communities and our world.
Just yesterday, I had the opportunity to sit down with one of the people I respect the most--an old colleague from undergrad. He challenged his girlfriend and I--who were both at the table--asking us if when we "made it," would we have the time, energy, or desire to give back to the lower-income communities we presently are committed to serve.
I know I'm quite capable of entering corporate America. I honestly believe that with my credentials and ability to adjust to a variety of environments, I could most certainly contribute to the greater good of society within corporate America if I am strategic about it. On the other hand, I can definitely see myself pursuing leadership in our nation's nonprofit community, doing work which more explicitly impacts social change. No matter where I'm at, I know I have to be fulfilling my commitment to hands-on interaction with lower-income communities.
For me, it is a matter of principle. I grew up seeing what a lack of resources can do to a community. The mass destruction that despair and lack can cause youth and adults alike keep me going back to community centers, shelters, schools, and the like to do whatever I can to bring hope, inspiration, education, and awareness to those who need it the most. So, without hesitation, I told my respected colleague just that.
You, Skillologist, will have to examine the breadth and depth of your connection with specific communities as you move forward on your professional journey. Doing so now will allow you too to be confident in your own answer to the question of what this commitment will be in the future. Everyone's connection to community varies, and a judgment call is not what I am advocating for. Rather, based on your experiences and beliefs, take some time to assess where you stand regarding the issue of "giving back" and why that is, so that when the question is posed to you, as I stated before, you too shall be able to answer with confidence.
